The Epic of Gilgamesh @ George Washington University’s Theatre XX

The Academy for Classical Acting’s 2022 cohort will be presenting their Spring Devised work, The Epic of Gilgameshon March 24 and 25 at 7:30 pm at George Washington University’s Theatre XX and on March 26 and 27 at 2 pm at the National Arboretum. Devised under the direction of ACA faculty member Dody DiSantoThe Epic of Gilgamesh is based on a poem of the same name from ancient Mesopotamia. Originally inscribed on 12 clay tablets in cuneiform script, the poem recorded the life and adventures of the historical King of Uruk, Gilgamesh himself. Perhaps the oldest written story on Earth, this text is the epitome of classical and has been lovingly and painstakingly translated into a beautiful performance piece highlighting the work of ACA’s 2022 graduating class. 

Tickets for this event are free, but donations are suggested. All donations go toward The Academy’s scholarship fund.

Kite Festival

On Saturday, March 26 at 10 a.m. ET National Cherry Blossom Festival will kick off kite-flying season with the Blossom Kite Festival on the grounds of the Washington Monument, for the first time since 2019. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the beloved springtime kite-flying tradition, and the iconic outdoor event is fun, free and open to the public. 

 

WHAT 

The 2022 Blossom Kite Festival will include: 

  • Kite competitions and demonstrations, including a stunt kite performance by 180GO!
  • Family Field featuring a youth kite makers competition, Bol races, and a musical performance by Guava Jelly
  • Kite making activities, large yard games, springtime crafting, and fun educational activities

Eli Waltz partners with An Indivisible Art Collective and Right Proper Brewing to present Eli
Waltz’s Americana Hour—a weekly concert showcasing artists carrying forward the legacy of blues and folk legends like John Fahey, Skip James, and Connie B. Gay.

“The aim of the series is to revitalize local interest in Americana, Blues and Folk music—a tradition in the D.C. area,” says Waltz. “Fewer venues cater to this style of music today. The goal is to reintroduce this style as a quintessential District sound, and bring the city’s history of Americana music to more people–to inspire a new generation of fans.”

The Americana Hour takes place every Saturday in March from 12 to 3p.m. at the Right Proper
Brewing Company’s Shaw location.

Anime Movie Days at the Wharf @ The Wharf's Transit Pier

The Wharf is celebrating the globally popular Japanese genre of anime with an outdoor anime movie festival on March 26 & 27 on Transit Pier. Anime Movie Days at The Wharf includes favorites like Steamboy, Okko’s Inn, A Letter to Momo, The Sky Crawlers, and more. Anime movie screenings take place each day at 2pm, 4:30pm, and 7pm. Tickets are $10 per person, and drinks and snacks are available at the Cantina Bambina concession window.
