Political Satirist Mark Russell Returns to Ford’s Theatre @ Ford's Theatre

Just in time for this fall’s political cycle, piano-playing political satirist Mark Russell returns to Ford’s Theatre (511 Tenth Street NW) for one night only, Monday, October 19, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. With material ripped from today’s headlines, Russell’s unique brand of comedy earned him the Mark Twain Award for political comedy and made him a popular favorite on PBS.

The 2015 Georgetown Gala, the annual Citizens Association of Georgetown (CAG) event that brings together over 400 residents, organizations, businesses, and politicos to celebrate Georgetown and CAG’s mission of historic preservation and improving the life of the community, will be held on Friday, October 23, at the swank Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown.

This year’s event, titled “Bar 1878: Georgetown After Dark” will highlight Georgetown’s unique combination of history, style and allure.  The gala committee, chaired by Tricia Huntley, Leslie Maysak, and Jennifer Altemus, is planning a special evening that will include cocktails, a high end silent auction, an exceptional menu and live music from DC’s favorite BroadSide Sound band.  CAG looks forward to dancing the night away with friends and neighbors — and celebrating this amazing city in which we live!

The high-end silent auction will include homes in Paris, Aspen, and Nantucket, unique photos from award winning artist, Ramin Abrahim, a rare Redskins package with former GM Charlie Casserly, fine wine, a full access Colonial Parking Pass and a Rooftop 4th of July celebration.

DC’s Dancing with the Stars Gala @ Hyatt Regency Tyson's Corner

DC’s Dancing Stars Gala will return for its sophomore year onSaturday, October 24 at the Hyatt Regency in Tyson’s Corner for this black tie event. The 2nd annual charity ballroom dancing competition launched by Fred Astaire Dance Studio-Fairfax’s owners and gala co-chairs, Jim David and Maria Coakley David will bring together some of DC’s hottest celebrity names and notable regional dancers to compete for the 2015 DC Mirror Ball Championship trophy and $10,000 for the charity of their choice.
Each local celebrity will receive ballroom dance training by a professional from Fred Astaire Fairfax for a once-in-a-lifetime performance. Committing their time, energy and star power, they will compete to raise funds for charity, and for the chance to be crowned the 2015 DC Mirror Ball Champion. Celebrity dancers will be awarded points by celebrity judges and be voted on by the audience.
Chelsie Hightower from ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, Lamont Easter from House of Cards and Shane Lewis from Naked and Afraid, will be some of the celebrity judges who will crown the winning couple.
The Gala will showcase some of DC’s elite like we’ve never seen them before. Dancing in this year’s competition is an impressive line-up of local personalities. The following is a list of confirmed dancers:

America Abroad Media ‘Power of Film’ Awards Dinner @ Mellon Auditorium

On Wednesday, October 28 – America Abroad Media (AAM) will host its third annual “Power of Film”Awards Dinner at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. to honor four outstanding leaders whose work exemplifies the power of media to inform, educate, and empower citizens about the critical social and public policy issues of our time.

This year’s honorees include two highly-praised films: Argothe American drama, directed by Ben Affleck, based on the U.S. hostage crisis in Tehran in 1980 and winner of the 2013 Academy Award for Best Picture, and Difret, Ethiopian docu-drama and winner of the 2014 World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Honored Argo guests will include several real-life houseguests depicted in the film, as well as Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor and former CIA officer Tony Mendez (played by Ben Affleck), both key figures of the rescue mission.

Individual honorees include Turkish journalist and broadcaster, Mithat Bereket, and Emirati media executive Noura Al Kaabi, CEO of twofour54 Abu Dhabi. Aaron Lobel, founder and president of America Abroad Media, said, “We are truly delighted to be honoring Noura Al Kaabi, a dynamic and outstanding leader. Her enormous contribution to the success of the media sector in Abu Dhabi, as well as her personality and leadership style, is an inspiration to women in the UAE and across the Middle East and an honorable reflection of the values of her country.”

The event’s host committee includes a notable roster made up of several distinguished AAM Board members, among others, Peter Ackerman, Paula Dobriansky, James Glassman, Martin Indyk, Dennis Ross, and Doug Wilson, as well as numerous international supporters, such as, Turki AldakhilMohammad and Hoda KanooCaroline Faraj, and H.E. Princess Rym Ali. The event co-chairs are Lester CrownLee HamiltonMichael Hayden, and Dina Powell. To conclude the evening’s program, attendees can expect an entertaining collaborative live musical performance by top talent from the U.S. and Middle East.

Fair Chance is in preparations for its highly anticipated Butterfly Bash fundraising celebration this November. The nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of children in DC’s most underserved communities will host its annual Fair Chance Butterfly Bash on Friday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This year’s event will honor Catherine Merrill Williams, President and Publisher of Washingtonian Media, for her dedication to youth-serving nonprofits in Washington. Morning talk show host of 94.7 Fresh FM’s The Tommy Show and host of the entertainment news segment The McFly Report on WUSA9 Tommy McFly has been tapped as this year’s event emcee.
“Fair Chance strengthens the sustainability and performance of community-based nonprofits to achieve life-changing results for children and youth living in poverty,” says Executive Director Gretchen Van der Veer. “Since 2002 we have worked with over 90 nonprofits in DC serving a collective 80,000 children and youth. Because of Fair Chance, these organizations are able to increase the number of children they serve and revenues raised by 50%. Fair Chance is a cost-effective way to multiply positive results for children and youth in our city’s most underserved neighborhoods.”

Art Soiree’s goal is to discover and support talented contemporary artists, by providing them unique and exciting opportunities to exhibit their work and showcase their talent to a wider audience, gaining local, national and international recognition. We do this by curating over 100 annual exhibitions, concerts, festivals and special events.
