Holiday Open House and Christkindlmarkt @ Heurich House Museum

The Heurich House Museum welcomes the public to celebrate the winter season during its annual Holiday Open House and Christkindlmarkt on Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7 from 12-6 pm. The museum will honor the Heurich family’s German heritage by recreating a traditional German public Christmas market in its garden.  This holiday shopping event, Dupont Circle’s only holiday market, will feature goods from local artisans, including jewelers, ceramicists, chocolatiers, coffee roasters, and makers of housewares, baby clothes, and more. Visitors who enter the Open House may stroll through the festively decorated historic mansion on a self-guided tour, enjoy the sounds of live holiday musical performances in the Conservatory, and bid on traditional Nutcrackers during a silent auction.  The museum will be collecting new and gently used children’s books for a local children’s charity book drive, and guests will have the opportunity to create ornaments to adorn the museum’s holiday tree. Café Berlin will sell Glühwein, sausages, strudel, and other authentic German treats.

Advance and At-The-Door tickets for the Open House are $15 for adults, $5 for children, and include access to the Christkindlmarkt. Tickets for the Christkindlmarkt are $5 and will only be available at the door.

Christmas Bazaar At the Embassy of Latvia @ Embassy of Latvia

Please join in on Saturday December 6 from 2-6pm at the Embassy of Latvia located at 2306 Massachusetts Ave NW at Sheridan Circle for an open house with light refreshments and an opportunity to purchase gorgeous gifts for your friends for the holidays, all hand-made and designed in Latvia.

While you are there, make sure to walk next door to see the exhibit: Art is Art: a Latvian Voice in Glass which showcases the work of Artis Nimanis and his company An&Angel. Featuring a combination of one-offs, limited edition and pieces in production, this elegant exhibition of hand-blown glass spotlights the city of Riga, Latvia who the European Union chose as the EU capital of culture for 2014. Watch for upcoming events in music, art, design, architecture and history throughout the year in DC as well as Riga, Latvia.

The Great Roar @ The Manor

Born from the sumptuous elegance of the Edwardian era only to be shaken by a world war and landing in a modern Eden. The Roaring 20’s marked history with iconic images of personal expression. Hyper charged fashion and style were all the rage. Think Chanel’s streamlined column shape, Charles Worth’s luxurious beading, or Fortuny silk dresses; the functionality of shorter skirts and the powerful alluring lines of men’s suiting.  The twenties had everything! The decade left us with youthful elegance, vice influenced trends, and rhythmic style.

The women truly explored personal style an expression with higher hemlines to due to the convenience women experienced during the previous war, in which hemlines fell above the ankle in an effort to conserve fabric for uniforms and supplies. The body was a slim long line with a swan like neck topped with a sharp yet effortless bob hair cut.

Men’s Fashion streamlined and peacocked at the same time. With bright new colors for day suits and skinny black tie Tuxedos for night. Gatsby cool boy chic filled the stores and their expensive shiny cars filled the streets.

“The Great Roar” is a fashion and art event opening December 20th at The Manor in downtown DC for a night of exploration into an exuberant era. VIP guests will be treated to a Yesteryear photo exhibition by Jay Snap, stunning living fashion installation of period clothes provided by collectors Jessamyn Goshorn and Randy Green; black and white silent  film, and a live burlesque performance.
