Old Town Boutique District Warehouse Sale @ George Washington Masonic Memorial

There is only one thing that will get avid shoppers up early out of bed, on a chilly February day to head to Alexandria – that would be one heck of a sale.  The 9th Annual Old Town Boutique District Warehouse Sale is set for Saturday, February 1st in Alexandria The once a year, one-day shopping extravaganza featuring high-end boutique merchandise will be held at the George Washington Masonic Memorial from 9AM-4PM.  Founded in 2005, the annual clearance sale has attracted a large and loyal audience of shoppers traveling to Alexandria from as far away as Richmond and Pennsylvania. 

 

Deal seekers will find the very best brands of clothing, shoes, jewelry, home furnishings and more up to 70 or 80 percent off retail prices.  Experienced sale shoppers line up early in the morning hours to get first grabs at top label merchandise.  Shoppers can enjoy ample parking on site, or a complimentary shuttle from the King Street Metro or 50% off garage parking (reg. $10) at Colonial Parking Garage located at 1800 Diagonal Street across from the King Street Metro.

Longtime Taste of the Nation Washington DC supporter Urbana Restaurant will be hosting a night to remember benefiting Taste of the Nation Washington DC. Join four chefs from DC-area Kimpton restaurants, including new chefs at Urbana and Zentan, for an intimate, 4 course dinner that brings together a bounty of local produce and seasonal ingredients. The diverse team of chefs are united by a commitment to seasonal ingredients that celebrate local farms and purveyors, as well as a stalwart commitment to the Taste of the Nation mission. The night will begin with a cocktail hour featuring a signature creation from Urbana head bartender Obi Emenyonu.Each course will be perfectly paired with award-winning artisanal wines selected by BRABO by Robert Wiedmaier Sommelier Matthew Carroll.

More than 16 million children in America struggle with hunger. Since 1988, Taste of the Nation has raised more than $82.5 million in the fight against childhood hunger, including more than $1.8 million from Taste of the Nation Washington, DC events. Local beneficiaries are Capital Area Food Bank, DC Hunger Solutions and Mary’s Center. Additionally, funds raised through Taste of the Nation have helped support the Partnership to End Childhood Hunger in the Nation’s Capital, the first of 11 state- and city-based partnerships to end childhood hunger across the country.

Russian eatery Mari Vanna will honor the city of Sochi, Russia during the 2014 Winter Olympic games by adding three, traditional Sochi dishes to their menu. On Friday, February 7th from 6 to 9pm, the Dupont hotspot will also kick off the games with an Olympics happy-hour, offering all sports fans a complimentary vodka shot and free bites from a pirozhki tasting station.
 
Sochi is one of the few cities in Russia that has its own unique, multicultural cuisine, with influences from bordering Georgia. During the 16-days of the Olympics, Washingtonians will enjoy: 1) Shish Kabob ($22), cubes of marinated beef, 2) Solyanka Soup ($11), a spicy soup with cuts of meat and chopped vegetables, and 3) Khachapuri ($21), a traditional Georgian dish of cheese-filled bread.

The Alliance Française de Washington, D.C. (AFDC), in collaboration with the Embassy of Hungary, is pleased to present French pianist Claude Bessmann for an evening recital February 8, celebrating the works of Maurice Ravel and Franz Liszt. 

Claude Bessmann began her career by winning first prize in piano in the class of the world-renowned pianist Vlado Perlemutter. She went on to win the gold medal at the International Competition in Vercelli, Italy. She is currently professor of piano at the Ecole Nationale de Musique de Paris and at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance of Paris.
