STC Offers ‘Romantics Anonymous’ Via Livestream Digital Tour

Well, if it can’t be staged, it can be screened.  Shakespeare Theatre Company will be showing Emma Rice’s musical treat Romantics Anonymous to subscribers, donors, and paying audience members for five days of live streaming from Tuesday, September 22 through Saturday, September 26.

Originally slated to play in April/May 2020, but canceled due to the pandemic, Romantics Anonymous is the story of two French chocolatiers who overcome their anxieties to take a chance on romance. A real “treat,” the show promises catchy songs and an atmosphere evoking the full palette of Paris.

According to the release: Angélique, a painfully shy young woman pouring her soul into her renowned chocolates, hired by Jean-René, a similarly anxious young man struggling to keep his father’s chocolate factory from failing. These two émotif strangers dance a gloriously awkward tango as they attempt to juggle their anxieties, their work, and their feelings for one another.

Sounds like the perfect pick-me-up during an interminable pandemic… and will be brought to D.C. through a collaboration with Wise Children, the Bristol Old Vic, and Plush Theatricals as part of their “digital tour” of UK and US theatres performed live at Bristol Old Vic each evening from Tuesday, September 22 through Saturday, September 26.

Digital Tour? Yes! Partner theatres across the world will sell tickets for different nights of the week. Each night will be tailored to audiences at those different theatres, with a sprinkle of local flavor added before the stream begins.

Tickets for this streaming event are available starting £15 (increasing to £20 the week of performances) and may be purchased here.
