DC Unites in Celebration of 10/10 Day of Action

If you think you know greenies, think again.  In celebration of International 10/10 Climate Day of Action, such diverse DC groups as Washington Area Bicyclist Association, Martha’s Table, and even the Hip Hop Caucus joined hands to organize a city-wide “Work Party,” including bike rides, block parties, and a vegan community potluck hosted at Bread for the City’s Shaw headquarters.
“Vegan is diverse,” said Live Green CEO Steven Ma, explaining the odd array of partnerships behind the day’s agenda.
Though not all involved swore off cheese and chops, Greg Bloom of Bread for the City agreed.  “Systems of energy oppression are linked to systems of poverty [and other oppression],” he explained, noting his humanitarian organization’s surprisingly green business model—the group collects leftover produce from local farms to distribute to the needy, and plans on installing a vegetable garden on the roof of their Northwest DC building.
Though an eclectic crowd and potluck dishes ranging from Moroccan stew to apple crisp confirmed the breadth and diversity of DC’s green movement, the theme of interconnectedness remained integral.  As summed up by Hip Hop Caucus’ Darren Hymes (in a slam poetry reading, no less): “one is the sum of all totals.”
