Feeling down this holiday season? Get a heavy dose of optimism and visit the Shakespeare Theater Company’s Sidney Harman Hall to catch its current offering, Candide.  Adapted for the stage by acclaimed director Mary Zimmerman, this 20th century Voltaire classic becomes an over the top comedic satire that just may get you lower – that is, on the floor… laughing

You’ll be in stitches as you follow Geoff Packard, who plays Candide, on his journey across the world, chuckling at the blunders and misfortunes that test the character’s optimistic outlook on life and love.  The  painfully amusing anecdote begins as he is banished from his home and starts on a wild quest to be with his love, the hilarious Miss Cunegonde (played by Lauren Molina).

An ingenious use of props and visual mastery – from toy soldiers, a model ship, and even canon fire (my favorite!) – combine with great character acting for a rip roaring reckoning that is without a dull moment.

*Candide continues at the Harmon Theatre through January 9, 2011.
