Degas Dancers Prance into the Phillips

More than any others of his work, Edgar Degas is known for his dancers.  A study in grace, agility, poise, strength and discipline, Degas’s dance works are some of the most moving art in popular galleries around the world.  And now, some 30 related paintings are coming together (dancers call that an ensemble) for the first exhibit of Degas dancers in Washington, DC in 25 years.

October 1 through January 8, at the Phillips Collection, Degas’s Dancers at the Barre: Point and Counterpoint will be available to be seen and studied.  But it’s not just the prancers en pointe that may pique interest.

Just as dancers endlessly practice their technique, so did Degas!  Find out about how the artist returned to earlier works much later in his career, changing them over time or context into the compositions so beloved today.
