Local Author Karin Tanabe Debuts 2nd Read at Politics & Prose

From the author of “The List” (which gave DC a peek inside real life at Politico), now comes “The Price of Inheritance.”  But while local reporter-turned-fiction-author Karin Tanabe admits this story about a young woman working in the high-end art world — who stumbles upon a rare antique and an irresistible man with a dark past — isn’t part biography this time… she’s certainly enjoyed diving into the details!

It goes like this: Almost 30 year old Carolyn Everett is a rising star in the American Furniture department at Christie’s, but one wrong decision and a scandal leaves her unemployed and desperate to piece her life back together.  Leaving New York to work in a tiny suburban antique store, she eventually discovers a piece of Middle Eastern pottery at a small county auction — which she purchases out of sheer curiosity.  Through a series of twists and pageturns, Everett becomes obsessed with finding the origin of the art, especially as it coincidentally comes to reveal the dark side of a new lovers’ past.

It’s about big bucks, black market promises and gambling with your greatest asset — your heart.

“With my first book, I didn’t know exactly how it would end, but this one I mapped out specifically from beginning to end,” Tanabe said as she debuted her second novel last week at DC’s Politics & Prose, reading from the book before taking audience questions — and well wishes as the event fell on her birthday.  “I lived my first book, but this one was different; I didn’t know that much about the art world, but I’ve loved diving into the research!” she admitted, claiming that art and antique furniture have now become a veritable passion.

Tanabe is already working on her third novel, with a release date in the coming year.
