Later this week, the Folger Shakespeare Library invites Washington, D.C. locals and visitors alike to dust off their doublets and dancing shoes for a day of lively, family-friendly festivities honoring the world’s most famous playwright. The beloved institution’s Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebration returns on Saturday, April 19, turning Capitol Hill into a stage worthy of the Bard himself.

The all-day affair, free and open to the public, marks what would be William Shakespeare’s 461st birthday—give or take a few days. Though his exact birthdate remains a historical mystery, the party kicks off promptly at 11am and culminates in the annual Shakespeare’s Birthday Lecture, this year delivered by the Folger’s new director, Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper.

From poetry to printing presses, the event showcases the many facets of the Folger as a vibrant cultural hub. Visitors can try their hand at Elizabethan ruff-making, learn the fine art of writing a sonnet, or watch thrilling sword-fighting demonstrations that bring the Bard’s battles to life. Dance contests and music inspired by the Elizabethan era will invite guests of all ages to move to a Renaissance rhythm, while docents and gallery guides offer insight into the Folger’s expansive exhibitions and historic collections.

“It’s a day where families can explore Shakespeare’s world in ways that are fun and meaningful,” said Dr. Karim-Cooper. “But we also see this as a moment to reflect on how Shakespeare and the humanities can bring people together and spark real dialogue.”

That blend of celebration and critical reflection will take center stage at 7pm with Dr. Karim-Cooper’s public lecture, Shakespeare Beyond Relevance. In her talk, she will explore why the playwright’s works—and the humanities more broadly—remain essential tools for navigating today’s cultural and political landscapes. The lecture is free to attend, but advance registration is required.

Dr. Karim-Cooper, who took the helm at the Folger earlier this year, is one of the most respected Shakespeare scholars working today. Her lecture is organized by the Folger Institute, which each year invites a leading voice in the field to speak on Shakespeare’s enduring influence.

“Farah has a rare gift for making Shakespeare feel both timeless and timely,” said Patricia Akhimie, Director of the Folger Institute. “She’s brilliant, warm, and unafraid to go to the heart of the matter.”

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the Bard or just curious about Elizabethan culture, the Folger’s Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebration promises joy, discovery, and—of course—birthday cake for all.
