From the landmark films of Akira Kurosawa (Throne of Blood, Ran), Orson Welles (Othello, Chimes at Midnight) and Sir Laurence Olivier (Hamlet, Henry V) to more recent adaptations by Kenneth Branagh (Much Ado, As You Like It, Henry V), Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet), Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho), and Julie Taymor (Titus, The Tempest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Shakespeare’s plays have proven to be a fertile source of cinematic imaginings. Art museum tour provider Shady Ladies Tours will present Nasty Women of the National Portrait Gallery, a Zoom tour of the world-renowned Washington DC museum, on Saturday, September 19 at 2:00PM EST. The online tour, guided by Professor Andrew Lear, offers perspective on the history of powerful and ambitious women—and the resistance they have always encountered—through art. The tour explores National Portrait Gallery’s rich collection of portraits of great American women, from Harriet Beecher Stowe and Harriet Tubman to Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Michelle Obama.
“Our tour looks at portraits of women who were reformers, activists, artists, writers, and thought leaders of their time. These are the women that helped to bring about the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and women’s equality,” said Professor Lear. “With the phrase ‘nasty women’ back in the news, we thought it would be a great time to actually celebrate strong, ambitious women and their achievements, all while also appreciating some stunning pieces of art.”

Ford’s Education takes you on a virtual tour of Ford’s Theatre and Civil War Washington. Learn about President Lincoln’s life in Washington, D.C., explore the events surrounding his assassination at Ford’s Theatre, and consider President Lincoln’s legacy. Length: 30 minutes. The Tea: Tashera
In this new online series, women musicians perform original work on the first Friday of the month. Conducted over a cup of tea, each session includes a short interview exploring the artist’s creative process. Join us and local singer and songwriter Tashera.
Tashera was born and raised in the heart of Baltimore City. She sees the city as a place full of talented and creative minds, which led to her pursuit of music. After discovering her love for harmony and songwriting, Tashera released the singles “Fall Alone” (2018) and “Get Up” (2019). She is currently working on the release of her first EP.

Join NMWA for BMA x NMWA, a livestreamed monthly talk show presented by The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) and the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA). In this virtual program, educators from both museums and artist Oasa DuVerney will discuss representations and assertions of power in artwork. DuVerney’s work, Black Power Wave: Drawing for Protest, is on view in Paper Routes—Women to Watch 2020, opening October 8.
