Tour de Fat @ Yards Park
May 30 @ 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Dust off the costume, shine up the bike and get ready for another epic and bewildering day as Tour de Fat kicks off the 2015 season in Washington, D.C. New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat arrives in Yards Park on Saturday, May 30. The daylong event is free, yet all donations and proceeds from beer and merchandise sales go to Washington, D.C.-area non-profits.

“Maybe you already bike all over town, or you’re a weekend warrior, or just a little bike curious,” said Matt Kowal, New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat Impresario. “If so, this is for you. It’s a summer stew of sorts where we all come together, let our alter egos shine with no inhibitions. You’ll find dancing, contests, bike swapping, music making and a tiny tent where anything can happen. It’s one carnival you’ll actually regret missing.”

In D.C., some of the eclectic entertainment includes Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Charles Bradley, yo-yo performers and vaudeville acts. Brewing education, a bicycle revival, rideable art bikes, a “Thousand Person Dance Contest” to win a New Belgium cruiser bike, and even a fashion show are in the mix. In addition, Tour de Fat’s Le Tigre Grande variety tent and Sputnik mobile stage up the ante, adding more entertainment options from past years.

Everyone 21 and older can sample new and classic favorites from New Belgium, including the brewery’s flagship brew, Fat Tire, New Belgium’s latest year-round offering, Slow Ride Session IPA, and selections from the acclaimed Lips of Faith series.

As for the fundraising, the entire 2014 season raised more than $625,000, with the Washington, D.C. stop bringing in $57,047. This year, all funds raised in Washington, D.C. will go to Washington Area Bicyclist Association, Black Women Bike DC, Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling, Phoenix Bikes and Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE).

Car-for-Bike Swap
Every year, New Belgium gets one brave role model to step on stage to trade in his or her car keys for a bike, pledging to live car-free for one year. Each swapper is awarded a stipend to buy his or her own commuter bike. Car-for-Bike swappers are chosen after submitting an application describing why they are ready to give up their vehicle for the gift of two wheels. We’d love to hear from interested swappers. Apply at –NewBelgium.com/Events/Tour-de-Fat/CarTrader.

Andras Fekete’s “maximal minimalist” ensemble BOAT BURNING plays an intricate hybrid of composition and improvisation for massed-electric guitars, where deceptively simple passages performed on a profusion of instruments – sometimes fifty or more guitars – produce shimmering towers of densely-stacked harmonics. The result is powerful, evocative music that combines the widescreen sweep of classical with the sheer physical thrall of punk.

Pride in Preservation: Cocktails in the Castle @ Heurich House
Jun 11 @ 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

The Heurich House Museum will host its second annual Pride in Preservation: Cocktails in the Castle event on Thursday, June 11, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 pm. This official Capital Pride Week reception will honor the National Park Service (NPS) LGBTQ Heritage Initiative and feature remarks on recent developments in the program. Guests are invited to celebrate with cocktails courtesy of Green Hat Gin and True Tonics while dining on hors d’oeuvres presented by Union Kitchen Catering. The museum, also known as the “Brewmaster’s Castle,” is a historic landmark in Dupont Circle, the neighborhood recognized as the birthplace of DC’s LGBTQ community. Admission includes drinks, hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to explore the historic home of DC’s most successful brewer, Christian Heurich. Tickets are $35 per person and may be purchased at www.heurichhouse.org/pride.

The museum is grateful for the support of the following sponsors: Capital Area Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Green Hat Gin, Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets, Latino GLBT History Project, Rainbow Heritage Network, True Tonics, Union Kitchen Catering, and Wells Fargo Bank.

The NPS LGBTQ Heritage Initiative explores how the legacy of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals can be recognized, preserved, and interpreted for future generations. On May 30, 2014, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced a new theme study to identify places and events associated with the story of LGBTQ Americans for inclusion in the parks and programs of the NPS. The NPS LGBTQ Heritage Initiative is the latest effort in the proud NPS tradition of the documentation and interpretation of civil rights history. Recognizing that identities and communities are historically situated, the LGBTQ Initiative acknowledges lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer citizens in the United States, their contributions to American life and culture and their efforts to create a safe and legitimate social and political place in American society. The NPS has already recognized the Stonewall Inn in New York City as a National Historic Landmark, and listed the Dr. Franklin E. Kameny residence in Washington, DC on the National Register of Historic Sites. For more information about the initiative, visit: http://www.nps.gov/history/heritageinitiatives/LGBThistory/

About Heurich House Museum: The Heurich House Museum preserves the legacy of Christian Heurich and enriches the cultural life of Washington, DC. The mansion was built from 1892-4 by German immigrant, local brewer, and philanthropist Christian Heurich (1842-1945). Recognized as Washington, D.C.’s most successful brewer, he ran the Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. until his death at 102.  The mansion is notable for its technological innovations, original interiors, and rich archival collection of one of the most important local families.  The museum, located at 1307 New Hampshire Avenue in Dupont Circle, is open for regular public events and public tours Thursday through Saturday at 11:30 am, 1:00 and 2:30 pm. Private tours and event rentals are also available. For more information, visit www.heurichhouse.org or call 202-429-1894.

Will on the Hill @ Shakespeare Theatre
Jun 15 @ 6:30 PM – 10:30 PM

On Monday, June 15, 2015, Will on the Hill, a favorite bipartisan event of theatre and political fans alike, returns to the Shakespeare Theatre Company. Now in its thirteenth year, this year’s event features a performance of Midsummer Madness,an original play by Peter Byrne, and directed by STC Associate Artistic Director Alan Paul. The cast will include special guest performer, STC Affiliated Artist Edward Gero andSamira Wiley, known for her role in Orange is the New Black.

The annual Will on the Hill event welcomes Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle and distinguished Washington insiders onto the Shakespeare Theatre Company stage to perform a political satire infused with Shakespearean language and references. The event pays tribute to the unique dynamic of our city and provides a wonderful way to engage new audiences. Proceeds from this event support STC’s many education, artistic, and community engagement programs including in-school workshops and online learning resources that inspire new and diverse audiences and deepen the connection to classical theatre in learners of all ages. Will on the Hill will take place in Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW), and begins with a VIP cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the performance at 7:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner immediately after the performance.

This year’s cast for Will on the Hill will include guest actors Samira Wiley and Edward Gero. Wiley is a TV and film star and a graduate of the Julliard School, best known for her starring role as inmate Poussey Washington on the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black. Gero has been a prominent figure in the Washington theatre community and STC Affiliated Artist has appeared in more than 70 roles on the STC stage, most recently as King Henry IV in Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2. He recently created the role of Justice Antonin Scalia in the world premiere of John Strand’s The Originalist.

In addition to Midsummer Madness, the evening includes a performance from students inText Alive!, a free arts integration program offered by STC to D.C. area schools, which teaches Shakespeare’s plays through performance and adaptation. This year, students from Virginia’s West Springfield High School present their disco-style take on the wrestling scene from As You Like It, which was performed earlier this spring for the Duchess of Cornwall during her visit to the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

About Midsummer Madness: Summer in Washington finds two lobbyists, one male, one female, vying for a job at the prestigious lobbying firm Stratford, Avon and Bard. Each thinks the other has the advantage due to their gender, so their interviewer puts them to the task of solving some of their clients’—and Washington’s—biggest conflicts. Things do not go as planned, however, as Shakespeare’s heroes and heroines emerge to join the fray. The battle of the sexes is far from over…

Many members of Congress will join Edward Gero and Samira Wiley on the STC stage, including Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and Representatives Joyce Beatty (D-OH),Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Susan Davis(D-CA), Ted Deutch (D-FL), Donna Edwards (D-MD), Janice Hahn (D-CA), Jim Himes(D-CT), Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Jim McDermott (D-WA), Jim Moran (D-VA), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Jared Polis (D-CO), Charles Rangel (D-NY), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Dina Titus (D-NV), Mike Turner (R-OH), and Ryan Zinke (R-MT).

Other illustrious cast members include The Honourable Ian Liddell-Grainger (MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset), Christina Sevilla (DA U.S. Trade Representative, Executive Office of the President); and members of the media, including Jonathan Allen(Vox), Ron Christie (CEO Christie Strategies), Steve Clemons (Washington Editor-at-Large, The Atlantic, National Journal, Quartz), Bob Cusack (Editor in Chief, The Hill), Rich Edson (Fox News), Amy Holmes (The Blaze TV), Rick Klein (ABC News’ Political Director), Latoya Peterson (Fusion), Thomas Rogan (Tom Rogan Thinks), Robert Siegel(NPR’s All Things Considered), Pamela Lynne Sorensen (Pamela’s Punch), and Kelly Jane Torrance (The Weekly Standard).

The Honorary Co-Chairs for the event are Speaker John A. Boehner (R-OH), The Honorable James E. Clyburn (D-SC), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) andU.S. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).

* Cast members subject to change.
