Food & Friends is proud to host a jubilant tribute to the healthcare, social services, and restaurant professionals who kept our community safe during a global health crisis.
Honoring Our Heroes will take place at the Marriott Marquis on Monday, June 13, 2022, with a cocktail reception at 6:15 p.m. and a dinner and program at 7:00 p.m. The event will bring together hundreds of leaders, volunteers, supporters, and community champions to recognize the extraordinary contributions of eight frontline changemakers who worked tirelessly to serve our community as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.

The event will raise essential operating funds to support the continuing work of Food & Friends, which provides home-delivered medically tailored meals and nutrition therapy to adults, children and families living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses throughout the Washington, D.C. area.

We have designed a celebration worthy of this triumphant moment, and the historically incredible people who got us here. Each honoree represents the core values of Food & Friends and exemplifies our mission to improve the lives and health of those around us. After more than two years of challenge and distance, Honoring Our Heroes is the event we’ve all been waiting for.”
The evening will honor:
- Chief Oluwafunmike Omasere, Battalion Chief DC Fire and EMS
- Chef Teresa Padilla and Geraldine Mendoza, Co-Founders of Taqueria Xochi
- Dominique Foster, 2022 D.C. Teacher of the Year, and Community Organizer at Friendship Public Charter School
- Alvin Chen and Jeffrey Naber, Core Volunteers at Food & Friends
- Reba Miller, BSN, RN, JD, SCRN, ICU Nurse at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital
- Dr. Bruno Petinaux, Chief Medical Officer at George Washington University Hospital
In unique ways, each of these leaders embodies the spirit of Food & Friends’ commitment to providing life-sustaining nourishment to our neighbors in need. As individuals, they touched the lives and elevated the spirits of community members across the region. Together, they offer an expansive vision of what it means to serve others.

Safe Space NOVA is pleased to announce its inaugural Once Upon a Prom (and Party). The local nonprofit organization benefiting LGBTQIA+ youth is hosting the inclusive prom on June 14 at The St. James Sports, Wellness and Entertainment Complex from 7-11 p.m. This Student Ambassador organized Pride Prom is unique in that it combines Action (LGBTQ+ advocacy), Compassion (mental health providers will be on call for the event and a quiet board game room will be available), Education (local affirming organizations will be on hand sharing information), and Celebration (it’s a prom and party, after all!).
The event is open to all students (grades 9-12) in Northern Virginia and the surrounding region (e.g., Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.). High school attendees may bring one invited guest aged 20 and under. Admission includes food, drink, photography, and prom swag. The prom will also include a live DJ, dancing, suspended ropes course, rock climbing, local vendors, trampolines, door prizes, drag shows, and much more.

NaLa Fridays at the Park: National Landing’s favorite concert series is back and better than ever, bringing live music, food trucks and fun in the summer sun to Long Bridge Park. The series will kick-off on June 10 from 5-8 PM with a performance by Reesa Renee, followed by: Dunlap and Mabe (June 17), The Collective Band (June 24) and Crush Funk Brass (July 1). Additional performances to be announced.
Composer, singer, accordionist and pianist Pascuala Ilabaca – one of the most versatile musicians in Chile’s contemporary music scene – joins her band Fauna this summer for their 2022 La Curiosidad [The Curiosity] International Tour, with performances in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Portland and more.

The Yards is bringing back its pink-filled paradise, Rosé All Day, for its fourth year! Guests are invited to sip on rosé from Yards restaurants Maxwell Park, Due South, and Osteria Morini, and participate in activities including flamingo croquet, glitter tattoos, flower crown-making, live music, and more.
