announced the 2018 Hall of Fame laureates. Since 1988, the Washington Business Hall of Fame
has recognized the professional and philanthropic contributions of outstanding business leaders in
our region who have made Greater Washington the city that it is today. The annual gala benefits
Junior Achievement of Greater Washington and its innovative financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship K-12 programs that inspire the next generation of leaders to navigate their path to the American Dream.

Washington Business Hall of Fame laureates have shaped the regional landscape of Greater
Washington and consistently demonstrated outstanding business accomplishments, visionary
leadership, integrity and strong core values, and, passionate community engagement. Following a
call for nominations from the general public, final selections are made by a nomination committee
led by representatives of the three founding organizations. More than 100 remarkable laureates

The laureates will be honored at a black-tie gala and awards ceremony, chaired by Grant Thornton
Partner in Charge, Markets, Industries, and Clients – Atlantic Coast Region, Richard P. LaFleur on
Wednesday, November 28 at the National Building Museum. At this year’s gala, more than 1,200
business and civic leaders will come together to honor this year’s laureates and raise more than
$1.4 million to support Junior Achievement of Greater Washington’s K-12 programs and their work to inspire over 66,000 students in our region annually to be financially capable, tenacious, and
equipped with the tools to manage risk effectively, solve problems creatively, and welcome
opportunity in an increasingly complex modern economy. The gala is presented by Capital One and
Grant Thornton.

BrewLights Bash @ Smithsonian National Zoo

Make spirits bright this holiday season at Friends of the National Zoo’s (FONZ’s) annual BrewLights bash!

From 6 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 29, come to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo for a one-night only craft beer event. Guests will enjoy unlimited tastings from more than 40 breweries and sample complimentary snacks, all under the twinkling lights of Washington, D.C.’s favorite holiday tradition: ZooLights, powered by Pepco.

“BrewLights is one of the most joyful times to be at the Zoo,” said Lynn Mento, Executive Director of FONZ. “You’re with your friends, drinking some of the best beer around, surrounded by amazing light displays, and all to support animal conservation. It’s such a fun night.”

Some animal houses will stay open late exclusively the evening of BrewLights as tasting stations, giving beer aficionados a special opportunity to learn about Zoo animals after hours. BrewLights guests can also take advantage of ZooLights’ attractions, including s’mores pits, a gingerbread throne and interactive “singing” light displays that glow in response to sounds.

Tickets for FONZ members are $50, and for non-members are $60. In addition to unlimited tastings and snacks, access to exclusive spaces within ZooLights and a souvenir light-up pint glass are included. Sober-driver tickets are also available for $40. Breaking Boundaries in the Sky @ National Air and Space Museum

Who’s behind the cockpit door? When we think of airline pilots, we have a certain picture in our minds. However, women and minorities are making important strides to increase diversity within the industry. These panelists, who have broken gender and racial barriers in the industry, will address the current social landscape of commercial flying and reflect upon their own experiences. When her American Airlines 777 was diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, Canada on 9/11, she spent four days being responsible for the safety of her crew, passengers, and aircraft. Her story is portrayed in the hit Broadway show Come From Away. – Brad Lang is a Delta Captain and the son of a Tuskegee Airman. He has been involved with the Commemorative Air Force Red Tail Squadron since 1997. – Refilwe Ledwaba is a South African social entrepreneur and pilot passionate about youth development and economic empowerment of women in Africa. She served as an officer and helicopter pilot for the South African Police Services for 10 years, and is now an airline pilot for a regional airline. Ragtime’s 5th Annual Prohibition Repeal Day Party @ Ragtime

December 5, 1933 marked an important occasion in American culture – that’s the historic day that Prohibition officially ended and Americans were, once again, free to (legally) consume alcohol at their will.

Ragtime, one of Arlington’s favorite neighborhood watering holes, will be celebrating the repeal of 18th Amendment with their 5th Annual Prohibition Repeal Day Party.

On Saturday, December 8th guests will be transported back in time for one heck of a blowout!

Guests will enjoy classic Prohibition era cocktails like Lucky Luciano’s Old Fashioned, the Blackberry Sidecar, the Rock Candy 75, the Frozen Mary Pickford and more.

Live music courtesy of the Laissez Faire Jazz Band will keep the crowd dancing from 8:00 pm until Midnight.

Attendees are invited dress in their favorite flapper or gangster-style threads to participate in Ragtime’s Costume Contest for the best 1930’s-style outfit.

The evening will be topped off with  complimentary champagne toast at Midnight.

Second Annual Light Up The Season Event to Benefit Children’s National @ Four Seasons DC

Light Up The Season is a family-friendly community fundraising event to benefit Children’s National to be held on Sunday, December 16, 2018 from 12 – 4 p.m. at Four Season’s Hotel in Washington, DC. It is co-hosted by Children’s Health Board and Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC.

Who: Light Up The Season’s Second Annual Event

What: This event highlights collaborations between Children’s National patients and notable area designers and artists – 23 in all from Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia, see list below and in attached press release. Together, they will create holiday trees, mantelpieces, wreaths, menorahs and artwork – all available for purchase. Proceeds benefit Children’s National. Activities for all ages include holiday cookie decorating, ornament making, musical performances and visits from Santa and Dr. Bear. Entertainment expert Penny Lyons of Lyonslifestyle will offer an exclusive presentation focused on her “making the ordinary extraordinary” approach to entertaining at home.

April McClain-Delaney, regulatory attorney and Washington Director of Common Sense Media, will serve as this year’s Light Up The Season Honorary Chair. McClain-Delaney is a longtime advocate for children. She has served on the Children’s Hospital Foundation Board, was named an outstanding woman alumnae by Georgetown Law Center, is a John Carroll Society Awardee and is married to Maryland Congressman John Delaney.

Redskins Viewing Party @ Patriot Harley-Davidson

Patriot Harley-Davidson, 9739 Fairfax Boulevard, will host a special Redskins viewing party on Sunday, December 16, from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., and meet & greet with former Redskin and Hall of Famer, Darrell Green.  The event is FREE and open to the public.

Watch the 1 p.m. Redskins/Jaguars game on a big screen while you check out the Harley-Davidson motorcycles.  Darrell Green will be available for pictures throughout the event and will take part in a half-time Q&A session.

Additionally, photos that can be autographed, will be available in exchange for a new, unused, unwrapped toy donation for the Sheehy Toys for Tots toy drive, or $25 in Harley-Davidson merchandise purchased that day.  These photos are the only items Green will autograph.

Sports memorabilia including Green’s Hall of Fame Bust and Jacket will also be on display, along with Green’s custom Redskins-themed Harley-Davidson.  The TEAM 980 Street Team will also be on-hand to keep the party going.
