WHAT:

Attendees will be able to sample from more than 60 of the region’s most popular restaurants, taste over 50 brews in the Beer Garden, try more than 50 wines on the Taste of DC Wine Walk and enjoy nonstop entertainment on three different stages. Among the restaurants:  Morton’s, Ben’s Chili Bowl, Carmine’s,  Smoke & Barrel, Del Frisco’s, Tortilla Coast, CRAVE Bethesda plus more than a dozen food trucks.

 

Saturday, October 103 PM: The 5th Annual Ben’s Chili Bowl World Chili Eating Championship. Contestants include some of the world’s most famous professional eaters including defending Chili Eating champ Joey “Jaws” Chestnut and Sonya “The Black Widow” vying for the World Championship title.  The competition takes place on the Taste of DC Main Stage.

The Mind of a Critic: Dishing on D.C.’s Dining Scene @ Navy Memorial

The Smithsonian Associates, in collaboration with KONNECTED Media Group, presents an exclusive and engaging evening featuring a live panel discussing with notable local food critics and writers, Tom Sietsema (Washington Post), Jessica Sidman (Washington City Paper), Stefanie Gans (Northern Virginia Magazine), Todd Kliman (Washingtonian) and Phyllis Richman (former Washington Post food critic), Sunday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. at Navy Memorial, 701 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W.

In conversation with Mary Beth Albright, food writer for National Geographic, food attorney, former restaurant critic and finalist on Food Network Star, Sietsema, Sidman, Gans, Kliman, and Richman will talk about becoming food critics, fascinating experiences while on the job, insights on trends and Washington and Northern Virginia’s ever-evolving dining scene, from brick-and-mortar spots to pop ups, food trucks and everything in between. (Note: to preserve their anonymity, one or more panelists will either be disguised on stage or speak from off stage.)

A light reception follows the program featuring an assortment of savory bites, local spirits from Catoctin Creek Distillery and Don Ciccio & Figli and signature craft cocktails created by mixologists and bartenders Gina Chersevani of Buffalo & Bergen, Paul Taylor of Southern Efficiency, and Todd Thrasher of Bar PX.

National Archives Panel on Prohibition @ National Archives Museum

On Thursday, October 22, at 7 p.m., the National Archives hosts a special panel discussion on the history and impact of alcohol regulation. Author and alcohol historian Garrett Peck (The Prohibition Hangover) will moderate a discussion on the origins, effects, and current debate over the regulation of alcohol—exploring topics including the three-tier system of alcohol distribution, recent industry changes, and privatization of state controlled outlets.  Panelists will include Jim Sgueo, President and CEO of the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association; T. Kelley Spillane, Senior Vice President of Global Sales, Castle Brands; and Brien Fox, Chairman of the Board, Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America.

This event is free and open to the public and will take place in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Museum in Washington, DC, and streamedlive on YouTube. Attendees should use the Special Events entrance on Constitution at 7th Street NW. Metro accessible on the Yellow and Green lines, Archives/Navy Memorial station. DC’s Dancing with the Stars Gala @ Hyatt Regency Tyson's Corner

The glamorous DC’s Dancing Stars Gala will return for its sophomore year on Saturday, October 24 at the Hyatt Regency in Tyson’s Corner for this black tie event. The 2nd annual charity ballroom dancing competition launched by Fred Astaire Dance Studio-Fairfax’s owners and gala co-chairs, Jim David and Maria Coakley David will bring together some of DC’s hottest celebrity names and notable regional dancers to compete for the 2015 DC Mirror Ball Championship trophy and $10,000 for the charity of their choice.
Each local celebrity will receive ballroom dance training by a professional from Fred Astaire Fairfax for a once-in-a-lifetime performance. Committing their time, energy and star power, they will compete to raise funds for charity, and for the chance to be crowned the 2015 DC Mirror Ball Champion. Celebrity dancers will be awarded points by celebrity judges and be voted on by the audience.
Chelsie Hightower from ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, Lamont Easter from House of Cards and Shane Lewis from Naked and Afraid, will be some of the celebrity judges who will crown the winning couple.
The Gala will showcase some of DC’s elite like we’ve never seen them before. Dancing in this year’s competition is an impressive line-up of local personalities. The following is a list of confirmed dancers:
