Washington, D.C.’s most anticipated epicurean festival, the annual Taste of Georgetown, celebrates its 22nd year on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 11 a.m.4 p.m. with more than 60 creative tastes from over 30 of the neighborhood’s best restaurants, as well as an expansive Craft Beer & Wine Garden. The popular foodie event will take place in the heart of Georgetown, on K Street NW, between Wisconsin Avenue and Thomas Jefferson Street along the scenic Georgetown Waterfront. Attendees can stop by the Kids Canteen for FREE activities including facepainting, bocce ball, and more fun for kids of all ages.  Plus, meet your favorite characters on WETA Kids, Peg + Cat!

 

The longstanding event is presented and sponsored annually by the Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) and benefits the homeless support services of the Georgetown Ministry Center. The event began over 20 years ago by Grace Episcopal Church and its former rector David Bird and congregant Robert Egger, who went on to establish DC Central Kitchen.

WHY: Discover signature dishes from Georgetown dining spots, from new concepts to established favorites, while supporting the Georgetown Ministry Center’s homeless support services.

Come experience the newest of Dame Christiana Chiang‘s restaurants at Kizuna, opened in May 2015 at Tyson’s Corner, Virginia!  Christiana and Rock Fu, Proprietor, will talk about the fascinating history and creation of the dishes served.
Co-founder and CEO of Charlie Chiang’s Inc., which currently has restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area and Florida, Christiana also contracts with organizations such as Sodexho and GSI.  She has created many successful fusion, fast food and commissary concepts including Ping by Charlie Chiang’s and Charlie Chiang’s Kwai.  Christiana is the author of Life is a Banquet, a cookbook published in 2011.

Attendees will be able to sample from more than 60 of the region’s most popular restaurants, taste over 50 brews in the Beer Garden, try more than 50 wines on the Taste of DC Wine Walk and enjoy nonstop entertainment on three different stages. Among the restaurants:  Morton’s, Ben’s Chili Bowl, Carmine’s,  Smoke & Barrel, Del Frisco’s, Tortilla Coast, CRAVE Bethesda plus more than a dozen food trucks.

The Mind of a Critic: Dishing on D.C.’s Dining Scene @ Navy Memorial

The Smithsonian Associates, in collaboration with KONNECTED Media Group, presents an exclusive and engaging evening featuring a live panel discussing with notable local food critics and writers, Tom Sietsema (Washington Post), Jessica Sidman (Washington City Paper), Stefanie Gans (Northern Virginia Magazine), Todd Kliman (Washingtonian) and Phyllis Richman (former Washington Post food critic), Sunday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. at Navy Memorial, 701 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W.

In conversation with Mary Beth Albright, food writer for National Geographic, food attorney, former restaurant critic and finalist on Food Network Star, Sietsema, Sidman, Gans, Kliman, and Richman will talk about becoming food critics, fascinating experiences while on the job, insights on trends and Washington and Northern Virginia’s ever-evolving dining scene, from brick-and-mortar spots to pop ups, food trucks and everything in between. (Note: to preserve their anonymity, one or more panelists will either be disguised on stage or speak from off stage.)

A light reception follows the program featuring an assortment of savory bites, local spirits from Catoctin Creek Distillery and Don Ciccio & Figli and signature craft cocktails created by mixologists and bartenders Gina Chersevani of Buffalo & Bergen, Paul Taylor of Southern Efficiency, and Todd Thrasher of Bar PX.

Vide Fitness 5k Run/Walk @ East Potomac Park

Runners take your mark! To encourage wintertime fitness, wellness and healthy living VIDA Fitness is hosting its first annual 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, November 14 at East Potomac Park. The local fitness club chain will donate proceeds from the event to Thrive DC – a local non-profit organization committed to preventing and ending homelessness in the DC area. The 5K Run/Walk is open to the public and participants can submit their event registrations at: www.vidathrive5k.com.
Nicknamed Hains Point by locals, East Potomac Park’s flat running course, which circles the Potomac River, will serve as the backdrop for the event. Known for being both dog and stroller friendly, VIDA’s 5K Run/Walk is geared toward families, kids, weekend athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike.
In addition to hosting the 5K, VIDA Fitness will sponsor a post race happy hour for participants and their families at Capitol City Brewing Company-Downtown. From 11 am to 2 pm participants and their families can celebrate with half off bloody mary’s and/or mimosas. Before and after the race, massage therapists from the VIDA affiliate company Aura Spa will be giving complimentary massages. Spectators and race participants alike are welcome to enter in drawings for these grand prizes:
  • Poolside cabana rental with bottle service from the Penthouse Pool Club.

National Geographic Live presents The Science of Delicious, a culinary event celebrating the December issue National Geographic magazine story by the same name. The story, written by David Owen and available here, is part of National Geographic’s Future of Food initiative, a special five-year project that seems to show how what we eat makes us who we are.

While savoring innovative food and drink pairings from Chaplin’s Restaurant, attendees will learn the science behind what tastes good, what tastes bad, and why we even taste at all.
