Tour de Fat @ Yards Park
May 30 @ 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Dust off the costume, shine up the bike and get ready for another epic and bewildering day as Tour de Fat kicks off the 2015 season in Washington, D.C. New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat arrives in Yards Park on Saturday, May 30. The daylong event is free, yet all donations and proceeds from beer and merchandise sales go to Washington, D.C.-area non-profits.

“Maybe you already bike all over town, or you’re a weekend warrior, or just a little bike curious,” said Matt Kowal, New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat Impresario. “If so, this is for you. It’s a summer stew of sorts where we all come together, let our alter egos shine with no inhibitions. You’ll find dancing, contests, bike swapping, music making and a tiny tent where anything can happen. It’s one carnival you’ll actually regret missing.”

In D.C., some of the eclectic entertainment includes Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Charles Bradley, yo-yo performers and vaudeville acts. Brewing education, a bicycle revival, rideable art bikes, a “Thousand Person Dance Contest” to win a New Belgium cruiser bike, and even a fashion show are in the mix. In addition, Tour de Fat’s Le Tigre Grande variety tent and Sputnik mobile stage up the ante, adding more entertainment options from past years.

Everyone 21 and older can sample new and classic favorites from New Belgium, including the brewery’s flagship brew, Fat Tire, New Belgium’s latest year-round offering, Slow Ride Session IPA, and selections from the acclaimed Lips of Faith series.

As for the fundraising, the entire 2014 season raised more than $625,000, with the Washington, D.C. stop bringing in $57,047. This year, all funds raised in Washington, D.C. will go to Washington Area Bicyclist Association, Black Women Bike DC, Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling, Phoenix Bikes and Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE).

Car-for-Bike Swap
Every year, New Belgium gets one brave role model to step on stage to trade in his or her car keys for a bike, pledging to live car-free for one year. Each swapper is awarded a stipend to buy his or her own commuter bike. Car-for-Bike swappers are chosen after submitting an application describing why they are ready to give up their vehicle for the gift of two wheels. We’d love to hear from interested swappers. Apply at –NewBelgium.com/Events/Tour-de-Fat/CarTrader.

Pierre Garçon’s Third Annual All-White Clothing Charity Event @ Millenium Building
Jun 4 @ 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM

On Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. ET, NFL wide receiver Pierre Garçon will host the Third Annual All-White Clothing Charity Event benefiting Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) at the Millennium Building (1909 K St. NW). The rooftop event will team up Washington football players, NFL executives, community leaders and Washington notables.

As part of Garçon’s continued involvement in supporting at risk youth, his partnership with BGCGW seeks to create a stronger generation of future leaders across the nation. Last year, Garçon’s charity event raised $100,000 for BGCGW.

“I’m dedicated to the organization and helping boys and girls of all backgrounds become responsible adults,” Garçon said. “Organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington helped get me where I am today, so now’s my time to give back.”

High profile attendees from the first and second annual events include Washington Wizard John Wall, former DC Mayor Vincent Gray, hip hop legend Biz Markie and over 20 Redskins, among them RG3, Ryan Kerrigan, Alfred Morris, Kirk Cousins, Trent Williams, Brandon Meriweather, Kory Lichtensteiger, Kai Forbath, Colt McCoy and Niles Paul.

“Pierre not only supports us financially but also donates his time to our kids,” said Paul Alagero, Chief Development Officer for BGCGW. “During these challenging times, he makes the perfect mentor and role model for our members.”

Attendees this year will have access to meet and mingle with over half of Garçon’s confirmed teammates and enjoy complimentary drinks and passed hors d’oeuvres, live and silent auctions and a live performance by a surprise musical guest.

With the help of top sponsors The Tower Companies, Paisano’s, Burger 7, Brett Johnson Collection, Garçon intends to raise more funds for the BGCGW and their mission. Tickets are $250 and can be purchased at: http://www.bgcgw.org/pierre-garcon-all-white-charity-event/.

Chicha! A Peruvian Dance Party @ Blind Whino
Jun 19 @ 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM

WHAT:  SMITHSONIAN at 8, in partnership with the 2015 Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s Perú: Pachamama Program, presents “Chicha! A Peruvian Dance Party”

WHEN: Friday, June 19, 8 to 11 p.m.

WHERE: Blind Whino, 700 Delaware Ave SW, Washington D.C.

SMITHSONIAN at 8 makes a summer night even hotter with a Peruvian-style celebration at DC’s Blind Whino.

What’s chicha? It’s an urban music genre originating in Peru that combines a variety of global sounds like South American cumbias and psychedelic surf guitars with local Andean melodies. It’s also the knockout style of neon poster art that exploded as chicha bands began to make their mark in the late 60s.

Say chicha today and you’re talking about a distinct and vibrant mix of color and sound that is unmistakably Peruvian.

Experience it all as Lima’s DJ Sabroso and local favorite DJ Kristy la rAt spin chicha beats. Sample Peruvian beers and pisco cocktails at the cash bar, and get a taste of the country from local food trucks like El Fuego. Try your hand at silk-screening with Peruvian chicha poster artist MONKY.

The evening is the perfect way to whet your cultural appetite for this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival (June 24–28 and July 1–5), which highlights Peruvian culture on the National Mall.

Cash bar; food available for purchase.

SPECIAL FEATURES FOR VIP TICKET-HOLDERS: Exclusive early access to the event from 7 to 8 p.m., and enjoy small bites, an open bar, and a sampling of Peruvian piscos, courtesy of Macchu Pisco.
