Vibrant Oaxaca

Mariachis, boleros and grasshopper tacos were just a taste of the presented offerings at the Washington National Opera‘s MidWinter Fiesta, Oaxaca: Land of Magic and Color last weekend at the Mexican Cultural Institute.

Ambassador of Mexico His Excellency Arturo Sarukhan and his wife Mrs. Veronica Valencia-Sarukhan welcomed guests for cocktails and culture in what she described as her “second home,” a meeting place for the intellectual and artistic from both sides of the border.
As she offered to tell us about the featured faces of the mansion’s wall collage, her sister, also in attendance (the Ladies, at right), told us more about the best of her country’s vacation stays on which to bid in the Opera’s exceptionally large silent auction.

Mexican Tenor Jose Ortega‘s brief operatic program rounded out the Oaxacan traditional evening, whetting appetites for the Opera’s remaining 2011 season offerings.
