Swing with Some Sooners: Yee-Haw!

by Stephanie Green

Hang on to your cowboy hats, gals and fellers! Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic Oklahoma! is back at the newly renovated Arena Stage through October 2 — thanks to popular demand and a number of Helen Hayes awards.

Due to the circular shape of the stage, the audience is smack in the middle of the boot-scootin’, sawdust-flyin’ fun in this period musical set in the newly established state of Oklahoma where “Laurey” and “Curly” fall in love with each other and the prairie landscapes and good ole’ territory folks around them.

Even if you’re not a seasoned theatre goer, you’re sure to recognize some of the show’s songs like “The Farmer and the Cowman” that have become favorites in the great American songbook.

This  production is perfect for both the romantic softie and the lover of classic shoot-em’-up westerns as the story line features rugged cowboys and their frilly Phillies waiting back home.

And if you’re pining for a rural country getaway this summer, Oklahoma! may provide a temporary fix: the set is designed to look and even smell like a barn!

(*Through October 2,  most of July is sold out. Ticket prices vary.)
