Station 4 Makes its Mark in Southwest

You might walk right by this place if you didn’t know what you were looking for, but despite a fairly nondescript exterior, Station 4 has made a grand entrance.

A welcome addition to the SW Waterfront, located immediately across from the Waterfront metro (1101 4th Street SW), Med Lahlou (also of taverny tastes Tunnicliff’s, Ulah Bisto and Stoney’s) nixed his norm to create a dressier dining experience in a neighborhood that craved a culinary cornerstone.

But even with its modern atmophere, an imaginative menu (quite artfully staged dishes!), and the fact that it is – let’s face it – the only viable pre-theatre option for Arena Stage in SW, Chef Orlando Amaro has quite the demanding audience to please.  “We’re still working on all of the dishes, even after three months.  No matter what I do, they always come back to me with… ‘more bread’,” he joked at a media dinner Tuesday night.

The Italian Chef, with training from the Culinary Institute of Mexico, who is now featuring modern American cusine, makes magic out of simple roasted baby beets and appetizer pears.  The Maryland Crabcake, Shortribs Parpardelle and Holly Farms Chicken Medallion are customer favorites, apparently in that order.  But the Yankee Candle-esque housemade sorbets should be skipped in favor of a dessert of server suggested cheeses.

Finally, a foodie find in SW!
