The re-opening of the largest supermarket in DC, Georgetown’s “Social Safeway” was one of the hottest happenings in the city. Wednesday night’s Safeway Grocery Gala featured corporate bigwigs, Congressional representation, and the most extensive sampling stations imaginable. Even the Cristal was complimentary!
It was a fancy affair that brought out both newsies and notables, and that took… guts?? Our ears heard Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton thrice mistake the gutsy synonym “cajones” for “cahunas” – meaning decision makers – in her speech, ribbing:
“You’ve got the big cajones (sic) in the store tonight. You’ve got the little cajones (sic), too… from Congress. Well, they’re big cajones (sic) because they’ve got the vote anyway. But we’ll get there. We’re growing.”
While DC doesn’t claim statehood, it does claim a new 71,000 square foot glam grocery. The “Social Safeway” may now be the “Splendorous Safeway.”
