Portrait of a Lady: National Gallery Celebrates Girl Scout Centennial

“Be prepared” for celebrations as the Girl Scouts of America turn 100 this year.

Last week, the National Portrait Gallery unveiled its yearlong exhibit on Juliette Gordon Low and the scouting centennial, featuring an iconic painting of Low (the founder of the original American Girl Guides (later renamed Scouts)), an official handbook from 1920, the patent for the scout’s trefoil badge, pins, and other photographs.

The exhibit shows that, from the 18 girls who participated in the first Girl Guide troop to the some 3.3 million members of the Girl Scouts today who pledge to “Do a Good Turn Daily,” the Girl Scouts celebrate a Centennial that’s about more than just camping and cookies.

*In addition to events around the country, President Obama has signed an act for a commemorative coin, and the organization will sponsor a Sing Along on the National Mall this summer (June 9, 2012).
