Ñomongeta (Conversation): Guarani-Language Chamber Opera
Saturday, September 24, 2 p.m.
Free | National Mall
Enjoy the North America premiere of Ñomongeta (Conversation), the first Guaraní-language opera reflecting on the effects of colonization in Paraguay. Paraguayan tenor José Mongelós stars as a contemporary Guarani man who converses with Christopher Columbus about the effects of colonization on the Guarani people and the environment.
Ñomongeta combines contemporary and Indigenous music traditions with the lyricism of opera. Written by Paraguayan composer Diego Sánchez Haase and librettist Modesto Escobar Aquino, with epilogue by Pedro Paredes Argüello, this event is presented in collaboration with Opera Hispánica and the Americas Society. This program is part of the museum’s Hispanic Heritage Month events.
