On Sunday, April 17, the Washington DCJCC will partner with the Human Rights Campaign to host GLOE’s National Rainbow Seder. Each year, the National Rainbow Seder celebrates stories of liberation through an LGBTQ lens. The seder will be led by Cantor Jason Kaufman of Beth El Hebrew Congregation.
This year, the seder will be dedicated to the theme of The Hidden Hungry. Approximately one-third of the LGBTQ population is food insecure. At the same time, about 15 percent of the Jewish community is also impacted by food insecurity.
“The National Rainbow Seder is a celebration of our freedoms at Passover,” said Halley Cohen, the Director of GLOE at the DCJCC. “Yet, too many in our community are still struggling – not only against hunger, but also against a lack of awareness that LGBTQ people and Jews are disproportionately affected. Hunger often doesn’t look like what we think it looks like. Every year at Passover, we say ‘let all who are hungry come and eat.’ As a community, our challenge is to make that a reality – not just at this one seder, but all the time.”
