Kate Michael, @kstreetkate, is a Writer/Model/On-Camera Host and Event Emcee. Notable as the Founder and current Editor-At-Large of K Street Magazine, Kate started the site while serving as Miss District of Columbia 2006 and competing in Miss America (2007). Currently, Kate works as a professional spokesperson and model, walking the runway for such industry icons as Valentino, Derek Lam, Naeem Kahn and Oscar de la Renta. Her media portfolio includes a spread in Elle magazine and features on Inside Edition and BBC World News’ “The Real Cities” series. Join us as renowned artist Faith Ringgold discusses her art, her journey and the political climate of the 1960s. Her inspiring, often humorous, stories will illustrate her life’s work as an artist, activist, author, teacher and parent through the evolution of an incredible body of work. In this lecture, Ringgold begins in the early 1960s with political imagery and firsthand accounts of the Civil Rights movement as portrayed in her “American People” (1963–67) series. Her “Black Light” (1967–71) series as well as political posters and murals will be included. Images such as The Flag is Bleeding (1967), Die (1967), For the Women’s House (1971) and The United States of Attica (1971–72) will be discussed. A Q&A follows the lecture.
