After Abduction, Ingrid Betancourt Finds her Voice, Struggles to Find her Place

“If they gave me 6.8 million, or twice, or three times, or much more that than – say billions – I wouldn’t take it to just go back to the jungle and live what I lived.”

Ingrid Betancourt, abducted while campaigning in the Colombian presidential election and held in captivity for six years, was on hand at the National Press Club Wednesday night to answer questions about her time in the jungle and sign copies of her new book, “Even Silence has an End.”

Betancourt explained that – her story now told – she wasn’t quite sure what would come next, but what she welcomed most was rest.

“Since the day I was liberated, my home is a luggage.  I haven’t been able to find a place for me… I don’t want to be a politician – I’m not moved anymore – though there is still a dream of having a better world and a better Colombia.”
