A GLEEful Celebration of Ability

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) honored the award-winning television show GLEE and actress Lauren Potter with the 2011 AAPD Image Award Tuesday evening for leading the way in how young people with disabilities are perceived in modern media and popular culture.  Lauren, a 19 year old with Down Syndrome, plays the character Becky Johnson, a 16-year-old sophomore at McKinley High School who tries out for the cheerleading squad.

Here, she talks with K Street Kate about being on the show, how she’s personally combating the “R” word and her favorite GLEE performance partner.

Leaders from government, business, and the disability and civil rights communities celebrated achievement, leadership and progress at this 9th annual AAPD Leadership Awards, recognizing the relatively young organization’s work in serving as a powerful force for change – politically, economically, and socially.
