Mumbo and More, Superbowl Sparks Competitions Around DC

Smoked Duck Wings with mumbo sauce at Mintwood Place

As the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs face off for the title of NFL Super Bowl Champion on Sunday, some DC establishments are getting feisty and competitive, too. If you want to take sides — though to be sure, everyone’s a winner here — check out these local restaurant contests where your taste buds choose the champion:

Mintwood Place, Lucky Buns, and The Game Sports Pub are going head-to-head in a mumbo sauce competition.  Through Super Bowl Sunday (February 2), self-proclaimed mumbo masters — and everyone else — should stop by all three Adams Morgan establishments to sample their personalized mumbo sauce creations.  Just what is mumbo sauce?  A DC staple! This sweet & tangy condiment is often served with fried chicken and wings… But let’s see how these competitors offer their own fresh takes and tastes.

Participants will receive a raffle ticket with the purchase of a mumbo sauce dish for a chance to win a gift card to one of the three participating restaurants.  The restaurant which gives the most raffle tickets to patrons with their mumbo sauce orders will be named winner of the friendly competition, announced via Instagram on Monday, February 3rd.

And… it’s the season for Chili Bowl Cook-off! On February 2, Jack Rose Dining Saloon will host its annual Super “Chili” Bowl CookOff: an all-you-can-eat-and-drink rooftop party featuring unlimited homemade chilis and craft brews from 6-10 p.m. ($50)

Sure you can watch the big game on the heated rooftop terrace’s four jumbo-sized flat-screen TVs, but the action is so much more appetizing with unlimited beer and endless bowls of three different varieties of chili.  There will be Classic Chili with ground beef, red peppers, onions, and chilies, topped with sour cream, cheddar, and scallions; a Texas Short Rib Chili with red beans and braised short rib; and a Vegetarian Chili with beans, corn, and millet.

Yum!  Go team!
