LEGO Lovers: Art of the Brick Opens in DC
On World LEGO® Day, K Street Magazine experienced the new Art of the Brick Expo experience. This new exhibit officially opens in DC on Jan. 30th at the Rhode Island Center after touring over 100 cities in 24 countries. Here’s what you need to know!
Think of the whole expo as an art gallery of LEGO® works and sculptures.
LEGO lovers (and art and EFFORT enthusiasts) young and old(er) will be stunned by what creative Nathan Sawaya has built — 70 sculptures crafted from more than one million LEGO® bricks. Placards next to each detail the artists thoughts as well as how many pieces it took to build; some are truly mindblowing.
Room after room has reimagined masterpieces of famous art recreated in plastic brick, like Michelangelo’s David, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, and Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. But then there’s 20-foot T-Rex skeleton, an easter Island Moai statue, a plastic zoo of remarkably built animals, and many introspective pieces from Sawaya that are equally as impressive.
While “Yellow” is a crowd favorite — and probably Sawaya’s own preferred piece — KSM loved to linger over “Decisions” and marvel at the multimedia art produced with photographer Dean West.

According to Sawaya, “I first learned adjectives through School House Rock. I learned how to count to ten through Sesame Street. I learned about gravity through my Slinky. Imagine if a child learns about art history through LEGO®!”
After perusing the art Sawaya built, there’s an interactive LEGO® creation area so guests can embrace their creativity and build on their own.
Tickets are $15.90 for youth $20.90 for adults. Expect to spend about an hour.
