All the Devils Are Here & Patrick Page is Devilishly Divine!
UPDATED 12/20/24
Patrick Page returns to the Shakespeare Theatre (and our favorite smaller Klein Auditorium) with a one-man masterpiece of devilishly divine acting.
All the Devils Are Here: How Shakespeare Invented the Villain is Page’s introspection on Shakespearian conflict. Choosing nine of the Bard’s best baddies, he alternates between giving his own perspective and acting out portions of Shakespeare’s plays in which these characters perform their dark deeds. And then he invites you to decide for yourself… Under what circumstances might I act that way?
Contending that “human beings are infinitely more complex and wonderful than most of us can ever express or understand,” Page came to his own comprehension of Shakespeare’s ever-viler villains with his study for acting in [almost] each of the various parts.
“If you knew the backstory I have for Iago, you might not be so hard on him,” he says in a Q&A in the Playbill.
And so All the Devils Are Here: How Shakespeare Invented the Villain isn’t just a fascinating ninety minutes on stage — it’s also a chance to see this remarkable actor in nine remarkable roles including Shylock, Aaron the Moor, Angelo, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
Page manages to transform into each villain without ever really leaving the stage. Watching his process is the best part: the garment change, body positioning, and maybe just a little flicker of a devilish glint in his eye. He embodies the evil — and then he comes back to himself to explain why it’s all so chilling in the first place.
All the Devils Are Here: How Shakespeare Invented the Villain provides the ultimate rundown of villainous Shakespeare favorites you can encounter in one shorter sitting. It would be evil to miss it.
