Hillwood Floral Design How-To @ Online

Floral Design How-To: Holiday Blooms

Celebrate the holiday season with a floral arrangement full of luxuriously rich colors and festive blooms.

This program will cover principles of floral design, a step-by-step guide to create your own arrangement, and ample time to ask questions. It is limited to 60 participants. Supplies are not included, but a materials list will be shared with all registered users prior to the program, should participants wish to follow along at home.

OPTIONAL MATERIALS FEE

For an additional fee of $60, participants will receive all necessary materials, including:

  • White spray roses (5 stems)
  • Burgundy carnations (5-7 stems)
  • White tulips (5-7 stems)
  • Red Roses (5 stems)
  • An assortment of winter greens (boxwood, incense cedar, magnolia leaves, Carolina sapphire, noble fir tips, and seeded eucalyptus)
  • A low compote bowl
  • Chicken wire (to secure stems)

Exact supplies may vary based on availability due to coronavirus-related supply chain issues. Participants will also need water, and pruning shears strong enough to cut through greens such as fir tips. Participants may also like floral shears or scissors.

Interested participants must pre-order their materials by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1, and collect them from Hillwood the day of the program. Contact-free pickup is available on Wednesday, December 9, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and on Friday, December 11, 10 a.m.-noon.

CONNECTING WITH ZOOM

This virtual workshop is presented live via Zoom. The online “waiting room” opens at 12:30 p.m. and the workshop begins at 1:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to join with video; questions can be submitted via the chat feature. Please note that this workshop will be recorded.

In anticipation of its upcoming digital production of All the Devils Are Here, join STC Affiliated Artist Patrick Page (Othello, The Tempest, Hamlet; Tony Award nominee, Hadestown) and Professor Deborah C. Payne (Associate Professor of Literature, American University) as the theatre delves into all of Shakespeare’s most conniving, dastardly villains. From Iago and Claudius to Lady Macbeth and Prospero, the villains are often the most interesting and complex characters in each play.

In the spirit of previous episodes on Shakespeare’s Clowns and Heroines, this episode will explore the wide-ranging characteristics of the Bard’s baddies.

Making their television debut in 2011, Those Funny Little People appeared on the TV show America’s Got Talent as four elves, an agent, and a showgirl. The group resonated with audiences everywhere and placed within the top 36 acts. Enjoy their holiday entertainment from the comfort of your home. WHAT: The Kelvin, Navy Yard’s most vibrant and exciting residential building, is getting warm and fuzzy this holiday season with activities that celebrate two of our favorite things: pets and sweaters! Enjoy some much-needed holiday cheer with a festive pet photoshoot on The Kelvin’s rooftop and an ugly sweater night at The Kelvin and The Bullpen. Even though baseball season is over, guests can still enjoy incredible views of the stadium and the fun of the Bullpen through these safe, socially distant engagements. Both of these free activations are reservation-only to manage attendance size, and more details can be found below.

WHEN:

  • Holiday Pet Portraits at The Kelvin – Saturday, December 12th, 1:00-4:00pm: Bring your furry friend to The Kelvin for a photo session on our spectacular roof, with views directly into Nats Stadium. Select a time slot to visit The Kelvin and get your pup’s picture taken while you treat yourself to a hot cocoa bar and grab treats for your dog to take home with you!

32 Bright Clouds: Beethoven Conversations Around the World is a global music-commissioning, performing and recording project curated by pianist Yael Weiss. The project commissions a diverse group of composers from countries of conflict and unrest around the world, with all new works unified by a single “Peace motif” from Beethoven, where he added the inscription “A Call for Inward and Outward Peace” above the notes. Each new composition is connected to one of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas. 32 Bright Clouds aims to harness music’s great power for unity and peace.

Inside The Kelvin, you’ll find photo opportunities for you and your friends and can head to the rooftop for the ultimate view of Nats Stadium. Use your team photo as your ticket to The Bullpen, where you can cash in for a free drink, courtesy of The Kelvin! This event is 21+ and a valid ID is required for entry.
