Internews

If you weren’t at DLA Piper last Tuesday night (don’t worry, you’re not the only one who didn’t know what that was, but we hope you clicked the link to find out!), you might not know about Internews. We just learned about that one this year, too!

According to their site, “Internews is an international media development organization whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.” Well what are they doing in DC? Just using the most powerful city in the world to make a statement about the power of the message media voices are delivering.

KStreetKate.net was a host for the group’s 2009 Internews Media Leadership Awards, a commemoration of local media worldwide, and a celebration of Tasneem Ahmar, Ramak/Jean Fedner Chery, Thepchai Yong and James Nachtwey’s many works and accomplishments.

“Journalism is more than a service industry, and we are the servants,” Nachtwey told the crowd before Internews offered a viewing of “When Information Saves Lives: Engaging Local Media in the Humanitarian Crises” to a standing ovation. Through the leadership awards, Internews illuminates just how vital local media are to their communities – for humanitarian information, news you can use, or even to have just a little more knowledge of life’s little luxuries.
