Gloria Estefan and Dikembe Mutombo among immigrants sharing their American Dream

Prominent immigrants Eric Benhamu, Amador S. Bustos, Roger Cohen, Gloria Estefan, Dikembe Mutumbo, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ahmed Zewail were celebrated for their accomplishements Tuesday evening at the annual Merage Foundation Leadership Awards, held at the National Press Club.

New York Times columnist Roger Cohen attended with his wife — who may have been the newest American in the room — she had just been through the naturalization process ten days earlier!
A Sephardic Jew, Eric Benhamou detailed his immigration experience (which he stated “Helen Thomas might like to forget…”) and told how he moved on from that tough time to create Benhamou Global Ventures, investing in innovative high tech firms around the world.

“It’s been a long three months!” said Gloria Estefan, speaking about the length of time she expected to be a refugee from Cuba.  Estefan claims her greatest achievement to date is her marriage of 32 years to husband Emilio along with her two children Nayib (29) and Emily Marie (15).
