Renaissance Dupont Circle Hotel will host a public screening of award-winning documentary Awaken The Dragon, directed by Liz Oakley. The Renaissance Dupont Circle Hotel will transform into an intimate and inviting theater allowing guests to discover the thought provoking film on Tuesday August 27, 2013 from 7pm to 10pm.

Awaken the Dragon is an inspiring film set against the backdrop of the exciting world of dragon boat racing. The ancient Chinese sport enables cancer survivors to face their challenges with the courage and ferocity of an immortal creature. The film introduces us to an unlikely crew of men and women whose unconventional path to wellness takes views on a remarkable journey of hope and healing.

Guests will be treated to a unique theater experience complete with custom menu from Chef Devon Capili including Steak ‘Em Chili Half Smokes with smoked cheddar cheese, onions and mustard and Capital City Wings tossed with soy-ginger mumbo sauce alongside an assortment of cocktails and regional micro-brews. A percentage of food and beverage sold Tuesday night will be donated to GoPink!DC and Hope Connections for Cancer Support.

GoPink!DC is the premiere and only dragon boat team in Washington, DC whose members are exclusively breast cancer survivors and female supporters. The diagnosis of breast cancer — either personally or of a loved one — is their common bond. Paddling together in a twenty-person dragon boat has created a treasured sisterhood for the team, offering fitness, friendship, and fun. Members come from all walks of life including career women, moms, and retirees.

Hope Connections for Cancer Support is a local nonprofit organization that helps people with cancer and their loved ones deal with the emotional and physical impact of cancer through professionally facilitated programs of emotional support, education, wellness and hope. The program provides support groups for people with all types of cancer and for caregivers, educational workshops that provide learning opportunities, and mind/body classes that help rebuild core strength and reduce the high level of stress that comes with a cancer diagnosis – all at no cost to participants.

The event is supported, in part, by local partners Baltimore/Annapolis Dragon Boat, and DC Dragon Boat Club.
