Celebrating the dozen-plus films originating from Brazil (and embracing a fantastic party theme), the DC Shorts Film Festival threw their own Brazilian Carnival Saturday night at the Artisphere in Arlington.

At first, festival founder and director Jon Gann had been thinking “just rum drinks,” he said, joking about the planning process and now standing in front of an open bar in a pink-lit ballroom. “I said to him, ‘The budget is like, a dollar,’” referring to local celebrity event designer Mark Chaikowski, who volunteered to design the Brazilian bash.

But through generous sponsorship and donations from the likes of Whole Foods, Malibu Rum and others (and Chaikowski’s mysterious ability to procure tablecloths and other supplies, jokes Gann), over five hundred filmmakers and festival enthusiasts—a sold-out event—enjoyed Brazilian delicacies (the plantains were a knock-out!), dancing, and live performances from Alma Tropicalia (DC’s tribute to Brazil’s psychedelic pop movement from the 1960′s), the all-female drum group Batala, Brazilian jazz singer Elin, and a flock of sparkling, feathered Carnival dancers.

“We went a little crazy,” said Gann with a smile.
