What do you get when you combine music composed by members of Abba (Björn Ulvaeus/Benny Andersson), lyrics by the Lion King’s Tim Rice, the Cold War, and a tangled romance?  The hit rock musical Chess, playing now at Signature Theater through October 3rd.

Set during the war, an American and Russian chess master compete for the world championship… and the heart of the same woman… in this first performance of Chess in nearly two decades.

Set up like a chess board, the minimal stage set is one of the most interesting features of the production, as is the live band which accompanies the musical scores. And you won’t be able to stop tapping your toes to Chess’ rendition of Murray Head’s “One Night in Bangkok” – complete with  risqué dancing – by Broadway’s Jill Paice, Euan Morton, and Jeremy Kushnier.

Chess – at Signature Theater through October 3rd.  Tickets here.
