2010 Race for the Cure

Over 45,000 people made an impact Saturday morning as the largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives and end breast cancer – the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure – gathered supporters for a 5k race/walk loop around the National Mall that raised over $3,118,000.

Of the money raised, 75% will remain in the metro area to provide education and outreach to local women in need.  The remainder will assist in Komen’s larger Global effort for the Cure.

Ambassador Nancy Brinker, Komen Founder and CEO, and Dr. Jill Biden, honorary Chair with husband Vice President Joe Biden, recognized Amy Czelusniak and Jami Nelson Guerrina as 2010 co-Survivors of the Year before kicking off the 2010 race, joined by Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Both an important cause and a fun day outdoors for the whole family, the event’s most memorable moments are always the honoring of breast cancer victims and the sharing of survivors’ stories.

*Race day has come and gone, but the race continues.  Make an impact with a contribution to K Street Kate’s team (the fundraising continues!), or make plans to join us next year: June 2011!
