[Vid] Mount Vernon’s Immersive New George Washington Exhibit Now Open

Looking for yet another reason to head to Mount Vernon this summer? The estate just unveiled its biggest museum transformation in nearly two decades, and it has arrived just in time to continue America’s 250th birthday celebration.

Now open, George Washington: A Revolutionary Life is the centerpiece of Mount Vernon’s newly redesigned, 21,000-square-foot Education Center, a project that reimagines how visitors experience the life, leadership, and legacy of the nation’s first president.

The exhibit replaces the original Education Center that debuted in 2006, offering a more expansive and inclusive look at Washington’s story through nine galleries and six immersive media experiences that transport visitors from his childhood to his final days at Mount Vernon.

History comes to life through an impressive collection of artifacts, many on public display for the first time, including Washington’s wartime camp bed, surveying equipment, swivel chair, and what historians believe is his sword from the French and Indian War.

Now, this isn’t a museum where you simply read placards.

Visitors step into Washington’s shoes in the Revolutionary War Theatre, making real-time leadership decisions alongside his advisors as pivotal moments unfold. Throughout the galleries, interactive stations challenge guests to weigh strategic choices, negotiate constitutional compromises, and explore the difficult questions surrounding Washington’s presidency, military service, and personal legacy.

The exhibit also shines a broader light on life at Mount Vernon, examining Washington’s innovations in agriculture, his experiments with mule breeding, and the lives of the enslaved people who lived and worked on the estate. New research and diverse perspectives, including those of Indigenous communities and enslaved individuals, help tell a fuller, more nuanced American story.

The new Education Center serves as Mount Vernon’s “Birthday Gift to America” as the nation continues to mark the Semiquincentennial all year in 2026. It joins a lineup of special programming throughout the year, including Revolutionary War Weekend, Independence Day fireworks, and the Democracy Symposium.
