Smoothies, Superfoods & a Fresh Start: South Block Sprouts at 700 Penn

One of Capitol Hill’s most prominent retail spaces is getting a healthy new tenant.

South Block is bringing its signature smoothies, organic açaí bowls, juices, and toasts to 700 Penn in Eastern Market, taking over the corner storefront previously occupied by Cornercopia, the longtime neighborhood market and café that closed earlier this year.

For DC diners, the arrival imay be more than another smoothie shop. Founded in Arlington in 2011, South Block has earned fans for its fresh ingredients, neighborhood focus, and philanthropic mission through its nonprofit, Fruitful Planet, which helps provide fresh produce to underserved communities.

Pro Tip: The Eastern Market café is expected to open in early 2027, with a celebratory block party, live DJ, and (rumored) free açaí bowls for the first 100 guests.
