There was a Fiesta y Danzón at the Organization of American States in late March as the New Orchestra of Washington (NOW), under the patronage of H.E. Jorge Lomónaco (the permanent representative of Mexico to the OAS) and the Mission of Mexico to the OAS, held NOWFest, a concert, gala, and awards ceremony.

The event, at once a cultural celebration and showcase of the importance of art in daily life, also honored Neeta Helms with NOW’s Arts Matter Award.

Helms, Founder and President of Classical Movements, a music touring company, has made a deliberate effort to take ensembles to frequently overlooked destinations.

While attendees enjoyed traditional Mexican cuisine and bid on exciting auction items, NOW Artistic Director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez led the orchestra in works by Mexican composers.

Guests also had the opportunity to peruse the OAS’ extensive arts exhibit as they supported NOW in its mission to bring classical music to relevance in modern society.
