National Geographic Announces New ‘Museum of Exploration’

The National Geographic Society recently announced plans for a huge new museum, the Museum of Exploration, at its Dupont Circle campus (1145 17th Street NW).

This new museum in DC’s Golden Triangle is set to open in mid-2026, and will offer immersive experiences, curated exhibitions, a state-of-the-art theater, and places to eat, all designed with the Society’s mission of “illuminating and protecting the wonders of our world” in mind.

The Museum of Exploration won’t just showcase explorers’ expeditions through photos and storytelling; the goal is to bring those global experiences to life.

When it opens, visitors can expect a fresh new 400-seat theatre, a “walking dark ride,” a nighttime courtyard experience, and a new restaurant and retail store.
