Memorial Helmet Project Honors 102 Fallen DC Firefighters
If you’ve noticed a helmet on a light pole around DC lately, know that it has been placed there to honor DC’s fallen firefighters. A plaque, at street level, will also tell each firefighter’s story. This is the Memorial Helmet Project.
PEPCO and the District Department of Transportation are installing these helmets — 102 across the city.
The first one was placed at 14th and H Streets NW to honor John T. Williams, who died December 19, 1984 while searching for victims in a building at that intersection.
