“Maybe Happy Ending” – Robots, Romance & a Little Reality Check
Who says robots can’t have romance? Certainly not Maybe Happy Ending, the six-time Tony Award winner now charming audiences at the National Theatre as part of Broadway at the National.
Think of it as The Notebook, but futuristic. Instead of star-crossed humans scribbling love letters, we get a couple of slightly lonely robots who stumble into an unexpected connection and discover that even the most carefully programmed existence can leave room for affection, adventure, and a few emotional glitches.

The premise is quirky; the feelings are decidedly human. At its heart, Maybe Happy Ending is about relationships that endure when circumstances get complicated, inconvenient, and downright difficult. In other words: love, with all the feels, minus the predictable Hollywood packaging.
Directed by Tony winner Michael Arden (Parade), the musical has collected six Tonys, including Best Musical, and earned some seriously swoony notices, including USA Today calling it “one of the best musicals in years.” There’s no denying the show has a distinctive charm of its own.

And that may be the biggest surprise: beneath the robots, romance, and retro-futuristic whimsy is a rather tender question about what makes us human… even when we’re not.
At 1 hour and 40 minutes with no intermission, it’s also a blissfully manageable night at the theatre. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Bottom line: Come for the robots. Stay for the romance. Leave wondering whether a happy ending is less about how the story goes and more about who sticks around when things get hard.
