Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic Gala Raises $1.6M+ to Grant Life-Changing Wishes
On Friday, February 20th, the historic Washington Hilton hosted the highly anticipated Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic Wish Ball, an evening dedicated to granting life-changing wishes for local children battling critical illnesses. The gala, attended by over 750 generous guests, raised awareness and funds for the transformative power of wishes… raising more than $1.6 million to grant over 300 local wishes.

The annual Wish Ball brought together those united by a common purpose: to help children in the DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland region who are living with critical illnesses.
This year, the event was co-chaired by prominent local figures, including Mandy and Karl Alzner, founders of the Alzner Foundation and long-time champions for community building through youth sports, Brandi and Braden Holtby, renowned for their advocacy and activism, and Kristin and Chip Burkhalter, advocates for medical research into tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a condition affecting their son. The committee also included Michael and Tali Cohen, dedicated to community impact and supporting local initiatives like the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
In addition to an inspiring program and a heartfelt live auction — including truly one-of-a-kind offerings like an outing to see the Savannah Bananas — attendees were treated to delicious food and wine, and a feast of inspiration hearing from children who had their wishes granted.
The evening’s atmosphere was one of hope and celebration, with guests reflecting on the profound difference their contributions would make for children in need.
While Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic raised a remarkable $1,613,447 at the event, the reality is that every year, more than 500 children in the region are diagnosed with illnesses that qualify them for a wish. For every wish granted, at least one more child is waiting. The funds raised at the Wish Ball help to ensure that no child is left behind. This work is critical: Since 1983, Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic has granted over 12,000 wishes, changing the lives of children and families during some of their most difficult moments.

According to Leslie Annesley, the organization’s regional president, “Wishes are more than just a special experience. They provide hope and strength that can help children through the emotional and physical challenges of their illness. Every dollar raised at the Wish Ball brings us closer to granting these wishes and changing lives for good.”
This year’s event highlighted the powerful impact of Make-A-Wish’s mission. The funds raised at the gala help to ensure that even more children in the region receive the wish that can transform their lives and provide their families with much-needed joy and hope.
