Dirty Habit Draws Crowds with Massive Tuna, Tokyo Nights
DC may be in a floral frenzy, but downtown last Saturday, Dirty Habit offered an entirely different kind of spectacle. Timed alongside the National Cherry Blossom Festival, its Tokyo Nights event paid homage to Japan’s late-night food culture, complete with a showstopping tuna carving that drew a crowd before the first drink was even poured.
Taking center stage… an enormous 228-pound tuna. What could have been a simple culinary demonstration became something closer to a precision performance! Then, post tuna-carving, the patio pivoted into a street-style showcase with Dirty Habit’s snackable staples and a partnership with Love, Makoto serving sushi and handrolls.

The experience shifted into a lively VIP after-party that embraced the spirit of Tokyo’s bustling food stalls. Stations from ToriSumi Yakitori and Love, Makoto anchored the culinary lineup, serving freshly prepared sushi, sizzling skewers, and a range of small bites that encouraged wandering and sampling.
Behind the bar, the beverage program highlighted Japanese flavors with sake tastings, crisp beers, and whisky selections from Suntory. Cocktails added a contemporary umami twist.

In a distinctly DC touch, the event also incorporated storytelling through a collaboration with the International Spy Museum. Guests were treated to “Japanese Spy Tales,” adding an unexpected note of mystery to the menu.
