13th Annual Golden Haiku Winners Now Displayed
Spring arrives in syllables across downtown as the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District reveals the winners of its 13th annual Golden Haiku competition, a poetic pop that turns everyday pathways into places of pause.
This year’s theme, “The Joy of Nature,” drew nearly 5,000 submissions from more than 2,600 writers across every U.S. state and over 90 countries, making it the competition’s most globally engaged year yet. The selected verses now appear on over 200 colorful signs nestled in tree box gardens, transforming the neighborhood into a quietly captivating open-air anthology.
Top honors go to John Pappas, whose winning poem distills winter into a single sensory moment:
night snow
the hiss and pop
of an old LP
It’s emblematic of the initiative itself: brief, evocative, and unexpectedly transportive.
As noted by BID president Leona Agouridis, the annual arrival of these verses signals a seasonal shift, softening the city’s edges with creativity and color. And in a neighborhood anchored near the White House and shaped by global influence, the international scope of the competition feels especially fitting.
On view through May, Golden Haiku invites passersby to slow their step and savor the small. It’s a succinct celebration of art in the everyday… proof that even the briefest lines can leave a lasting impression.
