Eddie Izzard Brings a Solo Hamlet to Shakespeare Theatre
Shakespeare Theatre Company is poised for a theatrical thrill this spring as Eddie Izzard’s Hamlet arrives at the Klein Theatre, March 27–April 5, 2026… part of a newly announced North American tour that’s already generating global buzz.
Fresh off a triple-extended New York triumph, a record-breaking Chicago Shakespeare Theatre run, a six-week London engagement hailed as “spectacular” by Dame Judi Dench, and sold-out shows in San Francisco and Seattle, Izzard brings a bold solo performance to the Capital City.
This production marks Izzard’s second solo Shakespearean feat, following an acclaimed, sold-out take on Dickens’ Great Expectations in New York and London’s West End. In Hamlet, Izzard takes on an astonishing 23 roles, channelling the full court of Elsinore — men and women, ghosts and scholars, tyrants, courtiers, lovers, and fools.
Adapted by Mark Izzard and directed by longtime collaborator Selina Cadell, the production reshapes the classic revenge tragedy with clarity, accessibility, and emotional resonance. “Hamlet is the ultimate,” Izzard says. “This is a production for everyone — a timeless drama with an accidental hero. Selina, Mark, and I want audiences to see and hear an accessible, touching, tragic, and dramatic Hamlet.”
Known for smashing boundaries, whether as an actor, multilingual comedian, multi-marathon runner, or activist, Izzard brings trademark intensity and imagination to Shakespeare’s most iconic story: a prince set on vengeance after the death of the King of Denmark, unleashing a spiral that tears apart both family and state.
Behind the scenes, a world-class creative team shapes the experience: Tom Piper (set), Tyler Elich with Anthony Forchielli (lighting), Eliza Thompson (music), Tom Piper and Libby DaCosta (costumes), and Didi Hopkins (movement). Produced by West Beth Entertainment, Mick Perrin Worldwide, and John Gore, the staging promises a powerful, personal, and unforgettable encounter with the Bard.
Tickets for Hamlet at STC are now on sale, starting at $90. More details can be found at ShakespeareTheatre.org.
