Three Top Coronation Celebrations in DC
While there are plenty of British pubs in DC and watch parties all around, we’d prefer to mark the occasion of the crowning of King Charles III with pomp, political diplomacy… and definitely some over-the-top pastries!
Here are three of the top events around town to fĂȘte the crowning of the British Monarch:
Royal Afternoon Tea
The St. Regis Washington, D.C. will host a limited-edition Royal Afternoon Tea in honor of the Coronation of King Charles III from May 3rd to 7th.
Guests will be transported to the halls of Kensington Palace with a selection of deliciously inspired British treats that put a royal spin on the hotel’s renowned tea-time ritual. Expect to nibble (with pinkies up?!) on deconstructed beef wellington, smoked trout salad, English pea and Cucumber with pimento cheese and quail egg sandwiches… and of course sweets like a Queen Elizabethâs cake and St. Edwardsâ crown chocolate bonbon.
Coronation Garden Party
The Fairmont is also honoring the coronation through May 6th with a special themed menu in the loggia and courtyard bar. And you can even just stop by to see their Coronation Cake on display! It’s a seven-tiered fruitcake featuring the Kingâs favorite blue delphiniums and his hand-painted monogram in 24K gold designed by Executive Pastry Chef Claus Olsen, which features an edible replica of the Sovereign Orb atop.
But the truly royal-obsessed will want to attend the hotelâs Coronation Garden Party taking place in the courtyard on Saturday, May 6.
Embassy Excitement
And of course, the British Embassy in Washington is holding several local events for the coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla.
“We look forward to sharing this historic milestone for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with the United States and commemorating the closeness of our special relationship. In Washington, DC we will mark this important moment with a range of celebrations, events and community engagement that will reflect the spirit of the Coronation and celebrate the special bond between our two societies,â British Ambassador to the US, Dame Karen Pierce DCMG said.
In honor of the coronation, the embassy will host a (weather permitting) sidewalk celebration with British refreshments, childrenâs activities, and a British brand showcase on May 6 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm for the general public outside of the British Embassy (3100 Massachusetts Avenue on Massachusetts Ave).
Here’s a tip, too: Guests at the Sidewalk Celebration will have the opportunity to enter a ticket raffle for the chance to win two tickets to the UK-US Friendship Day at Nationals Park baseball game the next day.
