This New Gaming Facility Just Outside DC Turns You Into the Controller
If your idea of gaming involves more sweat than sitting, there’s a new spot near DC that might just level up your weekend plans.
Activate, the viral sensation behind the TikTok-famous Mega Grid, is opening its first Virginia location in Sterling’s Cascade Marketplace later this month — and it’s not your average play place.
Billed as the world’s first “active gaming” facility, Activate blends immersive tech, full-body movement, and competitive challenges in a high-energy space that’s equal parts fitness and fun. (Think: Escape room meets laser tag, with a little Mario Party and HIIT class mixed in.)
Inside the 9,200-square-foot facility, you’ll find 11 interactive game rooms, like Laser, Control, and the glowing, grid-based Mega Grid, each reacting in real-time as you jump, dodge, and sprint your way through challenges. Whether you team up in Cooperative Mode or face off in Competitive Mode, RFID wristbands track your every move, logging achievements so you can chase your personal best.

The brand has already become a global hit, with more than 40 locations worldwide, including in Canada, the UK, and Dubai. It was recently named the fastest-growing leisure and entertainment brand in the Americas by The Financial Times.
The best part? Activate is designed for all ages. So whether you’re planning a kids’ birthday party, a competitive date night, or a sweat-breaking session with friends who still think they’re 22, its designed for everyone to have a great time.
Activate Sterling is located at 20964 Southbank Street and opened on July 24th. Tickets and time slots are available here. Just be sure to wear sneakers… you’re going to need them!
