National Building Museum Becomes a Playground This Summer
The National Building Museum is gearing up for its next big summer stunner.
Washington’s iconic National Building Museum is planning a bold new immersive experience this season, marking the much-anticipated return of acclaimed design studio Snarkitecture (the team that brought us crowd-favorite installations The BEACH and Fun House). From July 3 to August 30, the Museum’s majestic Great Hall will undergo another awe-inducing transformation.
THE PLAYGROUND is set to transform the Museum’s soaring Great Hall into an immersive world built for climbing, building, exploring, gathering… and rediscovering the joy of play.

“Playgrounds are where so many of us first experience creativity, exploration, independence, and community,” said Aileen Fuchs, president and executive director of the National Building Museum. “As the nation prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, THE PLAYGROUND is a reminder of the important role public spaces play in bringing people together. We’re excited to transform the Great Hall into a place where visitors of all ages can gather, create, play, and experience the joy of connection throughout the summer.”
And just like The BEACH and FUNHOUSE, we’re guessing the fun won’t stop at the installation itself. THE PLAYGROUND comes with a full season of spirited summer programming designed to spark movement, imagination, and intergenerational engagement.
